Bloomington. Another Lesbian Movie.

20110619-124315.jpg

I wanted to love this movie. I always want to love lesbian films, but I am usually disappointed. Does that make me a traitor? Tonight, Remi rented Bloomington. One of the latest lesbian films being compared to Loving Annabelle.

We were immediately happy with the actress playing the slightly older Professor Stark. Tall, hot blonde with a cool as ice sexy thing going on. Nice. But the other lead character, Jacqueline, plays a child star that leaves Hollywood to go to college. She’s cute, but she looks disturbingly young! I mean, really really young.

This became our main issue with the movie. One of the main characters looked like she was fourteen and her love interest looks like she’s in her thirties. The age disparity, was distracting. Even for Remi, and that’s saying something because she loves older women and a younger student seducing her hot, older teacher is one of her favorite fantasies. So when the girl looked too young to her too, I knew I wasn’t over reacting.

The acting was fine in the movie and the story line was ehhh …. Ok. I hated the ending. I won’t tell you what it is in case you haven’t seen it. But that’s not the point. The point is that along with the love affair that was the center of this movie looking more like a child molestation at points, it also had this weird mommy theme. There were lots of times when the older woman would do particular things that just, ughhhh …. Creeped us both out! Like cutting her food for her, in a very motherly way. Usually little things like that may not have even been noticed. But since the age difference was a main point of interest in this story line, mommy-ish moments had to be on purpose.

I know other blogs and lesbian magazines have praised this movie. You know I love to support artists. But this movie had a creepy undertone to me throughout the entire film because their relationship looked more predatory, most of the time, then consensual. And by consensual, I mean, one of the parties appeared to be under the age of consent.

Don’t get me wrong, the older woman was hot. But it just didn’t sit right with either of us. So much so I googled both actresses to see how old they were in real life. While it’s hard to get a real age on any actress, it seems that there might only be a four year age difference in reality. But that was not what it looked like on screen.

Meh. It was mildly entertaining. I just wish they had made the younger actress look a little older then twelve. They did, towards the end of the movie but by then it was over! Go rent it and tell me what you think.

    Ick.

I had so many rants pop into my head in response to this (even though I haven’t seen the movie) that it feels like there is a logjam of words at the front of my brain!

I hate Lolita stories, gay or straight, for lots of reasons. While I’m with Remi and totally dig the sexy older vibe, I get completely jeebed out when there’s an intentional Mommy (or Daddy) dynamic in the storyline.

I hadn’t seen the movie, and now I’m strongly inclined to not see the movie.

*Substitutes time spent potentially watching that movie for actually watching I Can’t Think Straight, and The World Unseen*

Oh, and “The World Unseen” features the same actress from “I Can’t Think Straight,” and has one of those kind of “meh/sad” endings, but at least it makes sense in context.

    *Feautures the same actresses.

….DAMMIT. *Features. There. *Throws hands up and storms out*

Lol Elegy. Typos have been my arch nemesis lately. I recently posted that CCL had 20,00 hits in the last week as opposed to the 20,000 that I meant to say. It wasn’t until my brother in law said, “twenty hundred is pretty good.” oh geez. So I feel your pain. No judgement here. :)

I even had trouble with that in loving annabelle – though most didn’t seem to. Maybe my reaction was colored by the fact that we’d had a few. Scandals along that line at local schools and I’m a mom. That said, my last gf was fourteen years younger than me (but in her mid twenties lol)

I agree with you Heather. I thought the same about loving Annabelle but then one day Remi showed me the Facebook page of her high school teacher, that she used to have a mad crush on. It was then that we both realized I was the same age as her teacher!!! It was an almost eeew moment. But I didn’t meet Remi till she was 24, so it’s not as bad as it sounds.

Sounds like Remi met the girl of her dreams when she met you, Sasha. I don’t see anything wrong with wide spans in age difference as long as the younger is of legal age, and it is consentual (no power persuasion). Honestly, I am not sure how someone can relate to someone young enough to be their daughter and vice versa, but some people seem to make it work and they seem truly happy.

Just to clarify, Remi is notnyoung enough to be my daughter! She’s only 7 years younger then me! I swear!

I Can’t think straight is my favorite movie in the whole world!!!!! I think I am one of those girls…. just not sure which!

Oh, I know Sasha, that there really isn’t much of an age difference between you and Remi. I guess my wording seemed to imply I thought so, but I was speaking on general terms. Should have started a new paragraph, I guess. I have mush for brains today. It happens. ;o)

I loved Claire of the Moon and Tipping the Velvet

I just watched this movie and my first thought was…couldn’t they find an older, hotter femme to play the HOT, tall blonde professor’s love interest? All the time I’m watching this I am wanting desperately to be Jackie. LOL! Anyway, the theme of the movie is sexy…with a student/professor tone that rocks. The being scared in the bedroom stuff was kinda creepy for me because it seemed that Jackie is into lesbians from the way she is immediately checking out professor from the start!

I HATED the ending but…maybe there will be a Bloomington II. It’s the only rational explanation for the ending as far as I am concerned.

For those that like books too…check out author Sarah Waters. She has many good books…Tipping the Velvet being one of her best. I really loved “Finger Smith.” Check her out.
