I’m sure you have all seen or read about this. There is yet another bigoted group, called One Million Moms wanted JC Penny to fire Ellen as their spokesperson, because she’s gay.
As an outspoken lesbian, I am often conflicted as to how to best combat the biggotry and hatred that’s out there. It’s so easy to get caught up in the name calling and the insults. But that doesn’t do any good. It doesn’t make us look better and it doesn’t help our image.
I have come to the conclusion that the best way to fight discrimination and ignorance, is through truth, logic, reason and living a life that I’m proud of. So that anyone who meets me, and perhaps doesn’t have an image or a bad image of gay people …. hopefully their encounter with me will help broaden their opinion for the better. Remi and I consciously go out of our way to remain calm, when situations arise in public. Lest we be held up as an example of the “angry dykes.” Not that there’s anything wrong with angry dykes!! We need those too and sometimes, we ARE those.
But by in large, I think that positive images of gay people, like Ellen and anyone else that’s leading a productive, happy life is the best P.R. we can get.
I’m not talking about total assimilation. Or any assimilation. Just simply letting the truth get out there: That we are just like everyone else.
I keep hearing about the “Gay Agenda” from the far right. Apparently, we want to be able to get married so we can make better terrorists. I don’t know, maybe they think the extra business we’ll give florists will just throw America completely out of whack!!! They also say that we threaten “American values.”
Well, this is why I adore Ellen so. Please watch this video and listen to what she lists as her values: “Honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you want to be treated and helping those in need. To me those are traditional values. That’s what I stand for.”
I loved what she said and I couldn’t agree more. I couldn’t stop thinking about her statement and it inspired me to make this necklace. Yes, it’s a shameless plug for my Etsy store. But it’s also important. I forgot to mention that 10% of the sale of every stainless steel piece I sell is going to help fight for equality. I haven’t updated my store to show that yet, you’re the first ones I’m telling.
So far, I think Lambda Legal will be the recipient of the little charity fund I’m starting. I’m not sure yet …. still researching non-profit LGBT organizations. If you have any ideas please send them my way. So for now, I’m just putting the money aside till I settle on one and then I’ll mail the check in.
I actually started my jewelry line, for this exact reason. To increase visibility and for charity. One day I was thinking how nice it would be to donate to the cause. And then I thought, how nice it would be to be able to raise more money and more consistently help with the fight, then just my once a year donation. Then it hit me, make something – sell it – donate.
(PS: This counts for past sales as well! I just forgot to mention it!)
Also, I can’t decide … Should I call this the Gay Agenda necklace or the Gay Values necklace? Any thoughts?

it tore me apart that ANYONE would have anything against Ellen. i mean…who doesn’t LOVE Ellen???
it’s not shameless that this ordeal has spurred up creative energy. that’s where we generally get our ideas. from the world around us. way to go, Sasha! as usual..YOU’RE THE BOMB!
LOOOOOOOOVE ELLEN so much! I was never a JC Penny’s shopper, but I will definitely shop there now. And Sasha, your jewelry line is a perfect case of win-win-win!
I watched this the other day. She really is a class act and I think your ideas for charity are awesome as always. I love this creative outlet you have begun. Very proud of you my friend.
I love that necklace!!!! You know I LOVE researching stuff I’ll look into some nonprofits for ya.
I LOVE her line “my haters are my motivators”. She is amazing (and super sexy!!!).
)
For the necklace how about “Gay Human Values” since I think people only focus on the gay and leave the human out. I think you should send one to Ellen and maybe she’ll have you on her show. That would be awesome! Have a great weekend. Jaz/Jazz/Jazzy/Jazmenha (hehe so many names now to just pick one
I love this so much go Ellen =)
I’m so glad to see that someone else has posted an article about Ellen and the horrible “controversy” created by the OMM group. It brought tears to my eyes to read the many comments on facebook from all of her supporters. She is truly a wonderful person and they need to get off her back! Gay or not she is a better person than most of us! I also wrote an article on my feelings about the issue, I hope you enjoy it!
“Ellen is a Great Role Model, One Million Moms…Not so Much”

What on earth… even my extremely conservative, southern evangelical mother loves Ellen. O__o Let’s see, happily married to one person, no string of serial divorces in her wake… what exactly is not traditional about that? Shocking to think that all those people (I highly doubt they actually number 1 million) are responsible for raising the next generation. Hopefully their children will rise above their negative parental influence and learn to think for themselves. Like others have said, this just makes me want to keep giving JC Penney business.
On another note, Lambda Legal does AMAZING work and provides very useful information about gay rights from state-to-state.
I’m really happy you dedicated a blog post to this stupid controversy. When I read it, I was lost for words…I can’t understand the logic of One Million Bigoted Moms-ardently protesting against a spokesperson because of her sexuality while overlooking the trashy straight spokespersons. Where are the so-called core values? Screw you hard bigots and stop shaming your kids!!
Btw Sasha, congratulations for starting your jewelry line. They are awesome and it’s for a good cause! Good luck
