I just came across this and I am conflicted and enraged at the same time. I have blogged about my entire family being Mormon before and I have always stood up for them because my family, although extremely religious has never shown anything but support for me and my relationship.
So while it’s true, there are Mormons that do not support this … and honestly, I don’t really know where my extended family really sits on this topic because we don’t discuss it. They are way too polite to ever say anything to me about it, even if they agreed with the passing of Prop 8. We’re one of those families that smiles and nods and talks about the weather instead of the giant rainbow colored elephant in the room.
But as time goes on, it’s getting harder and harder for me to defend Mormons AT ALL. Let me be clear, I NEVER defended the church, but the members and the church, while intertwined are not automatically the same thing. I never felt it was appropriate to lump together everyone that’s Mormon with the Mormon Church’s political views. But it’s getting harder to do that. Especially with movies like this coming to light.
It comes out tomorrow. Guess what I’ll be watching.
The movie is 8: The Mormon Proposition

Ughhh I’m a little dyslexic when it comes to numbers. It doesn’t come out tomorrow it comes out June 18, on DVD July 13.
Booo
I am going to leave my opinions of LDS out of this. I do not understand how people can think that allowing same gender marriage threatens “family”. Equality is only part of the equation. Freedom is what is at stake. If you allow a minority factor to decide what is right for everyone, then you effectively kill freedom. The members of the Mormon church enjoy freedom to believe what they want to. Why do they feel it is right to infringe upon the same freedom of others? Their faith has not always been accepted by the mainstream, and even today, it is only tolerated. They have always cited ignorance and misunderstanding as the cause for intolerance. They should take a page from their own book and educate themselves. The last line from that vid said it all. “It’s only love.” How can that be wrong?
I watched the trailer and it caused me to have many thoughts. The first thought was, legal or not, some day (sooner rather than later), I will marry my partner. She is the woman I love and I want to spend the rest of my life with her. I want to go to sleep with her every night, wake up with her every morning, come home from work to her every day. The second thought was one I hesitate to share. Being raised in an incredibly strict, religious environment and becoming a thoroughly educated woman, one interesting fact I came across in my studies, there is no factual, historical basis for the Book of Mormon. It cannot be proven in any way. I do not discuss religion or politics because of the firestorm of emotions it creates. I do not endorse or demonize any religion. But I will admit to being baffled by a seemingly large number of (educated, somewhat intelligent?) people who choose to believe in something that cannot be proven.
